Kwargaba community in Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State narrowly escaped what could have been another tragic night of terror after a coordinated response by local vigilantes and Nigerian Army troops successfully repelled a bandit attack late last night.
Residents say the attackers stormed the community under the cover of darkness, firing shots to create panic and force people out of their homes. The situation, however, took a dramatic turn when a community alert was sent out to the nearby Marnona military base. Soldiers immediately mobilised alongside local vigilantes and raced to the scene.
On arrival, the security team engaged the heavily armed bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire. The confrontation ended with two of the assailants neutralised, while three others were captured alive as they attempted to flee. Their arrests are expected to aid ongoing intelligence efforts aimed at crippling the wider network operating in the area.
Remarkably, no resident of Kwargaba was harmed, abducted, or displaced during the incident — an outcome the community attributes to the prompt and decisive response of the security team. For many villagers who have endured repeated attacks over the years, the successful defence of their community marks a significant morale boost.
Locals have since poured out their appreciation to the Nigerian Army, applauding the professionalism and swift reaction of the troops, as well as the bravery of the vigilantes who stood firm in the face of danger. Community leaders say the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of timely intelligence-sharing and improved cooperation between citizens and security forces.
The incident stands as a rare but encouraging win in the broader battle against banditry across Sokoto and other parts of the North-West, where rural communities continue to face persistent threats from armed groups.
Kwargaba residents say they hope this momentum will be sustained, reinforcing their confidence that security forces can reclaim vulnerable areas and restore lasting peace.
