President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has unveiled a landmark collaboration between the Federal Government, global aerospace giant Boeing, and the UK-based Cranfield University to establish a state-of-the-art Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Nigeria. The announcement signals a major step toward advancing the nation’s aviation industry, creating high-skilled jobs, and positioning Nigeria as a hub for aerospace engineering and technical services in Africa.

Speaking on the initiative, President Tinubu emphasized that the partnership reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging global expertise to strengthen local capacity in aviation maintenance and engineering. He highlighted that the MRO facility will not only enhance the safety and reliability of aircraft operations in Nigeria but also attract investment, foster technological transfer, and develop a workforce capable of meeting international aviation standards.

The collaboration with Boeing and Cranfield University is expected to combine cutting-edge aerospace technology with world-class research and training programs. Cranfield University, renowned for its engineering and aviation expertise, will play a key role in curriculum development, training of engineers and technicians, and implementation of international best practices in aircraft maintenance. Boeing, a leading aircraft manufacturer, will provide technical support, equipment, and guidance to ensure the facility meets global standards.

President Tinubu noted that the facility is poised to become a major regional hub for aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul services, reducing reliance on overseas facilities and lowering operational costs for airlines. He also stressed that the initiative will contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic diversification strategy, stimulate job creation, and strengthen the country’s position in the global aviation sector.

The project is set to provide extensive training and skill development opportunities for Nigerian engineers, technicians, and aviation professionals, equipping them with world-class expertise in aircraft maintenance and repair. The President described the initiative as transformative for the aviation sector, promising long-term benefits for safety, efficiency, and competitiveness.

This historic partnership between the Federal Government, Boeing, and Cranfield University underscores Nigeria’s resolve to modernize its aviation infrastructure, promote technological innovation, and develop homegrown expertise in aerospace engineering, while contributing to broader economic growth and regional aviation leadership.

The announcement has been met with widespread enthusiasm from industry stakeholders, investors, and aviation professionals, who view the facility as a game-changing development for Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem.
