The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Wednesday hosted a high-level delegation from the United States Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) in Abuja, in a move that signals stronger international cooperation aimed at boosting Nigeria’s security response capacity.

Led by Acting INL Director, Dr. Douglas Grane, the team—which included In-Country Project Manager Randy Holliday and Program Officer Charsaree Slomka—met with the police chief to evaluate ongoing joint initiatives, particularly the operational performance of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS).

The visit, according to the delegation, was designed to “assess current SIS progress and explore areas requiring improved operational capacity, enhanced intelligence support, and targeted resource deployment.” The outcome of the assessment will shape the United States’ 2026 strategic support framework, with a focus on modern equipment upgrades and advanced tactical training for SIS operatives.

IGP Egbetokun expressed gratitude for the U.S. government’s continued assistance, noting that INL support has strengthened logistics and expanded specialized capacity-building within the police. He highlighted the SIS’s growing importance in tackling violent crime across the country, including counter-separatist missions in the South-East and joint rescue operations with the Office of the National Security Adviser.

He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, stressing that global partnerships such as this remain essential to strengthening national security and keeping communities safe.

The meeting reinforces Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernize its policing strategy as security threats continue to evolve.
