The Anambra State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on kidnapping and armed robbery syndicates operating across the state, particularly those linked to a proscribed secessionist group.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the arrest of 43-year-old Kalu Okafor at Okpoko in Ogbaru Local Government Area. The suspect was picked up in the early hours of December 3 by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, following fresh intelligence.

According to the police, the arrest followed the confession of another detained gang member, Chukwudi Nwakpa, who revealed that the group routinely handed over their firearms to Okafor for safekeeping after each kidnapping operation. During interrogation, Okafor reportedly admitted to receiving a share of ransom proceeds collected from kidnapped victims.

The police also recovered a cache of weapons during the operation, including one AK-47 rifle, one pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, 88 rounds of ammunition, two face masks, and two pairs of hand gloves.

SP Ikenga said the suspect is already providing useful information that may lead to the arrest of other fleeing members of the gang and the recovery of additional weapons used in their operations.

He added that further updates on the investigation would be communicated to the public in due course.
