A disturbing case of domestic violence in Imo State has drawn swift action from authorities after 38-year-old Juliet Igwe was arrested for allegedly burning the private part of her six-year-old maid, Onyinyechi, with candlelight. Police officials say the incident was reported by concerned neighbours before activist journalist Chidiebube Okeoma intervened to rescue the injured child and secure medical care for her.
The Imo State Police Command confirmed the arrest, describing the act as cruel and unacceptable. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye said the Commissioner of Police has instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take full charge of the case, stressing that the investigation will uncover every detail and ensure appropriate charges are filed. Medical reports and eyewitness accounts are now being compiled as part of the inquiry.
Igwe reportedly claimed during questioning that she had no idea candlelight or hot water could cause serious injury and insisted she acted because she believed the child had stolen meat. Her statements have raised further concerns about the treatment of domestic minors and the lack of basic safeguarding in some households.
Okeoma, who is overseeing the child’s welfare through his organisation, said the injuries were severe and highlighted the urgent need for stronger protection for vulnerable children. He noted that cruelty of this nature has no place in a responsible society and called for greater accountability.
