Abubakar Malami, SAN, has issued a firm public statement distancing himself from recent allegations linking his name to terrorism financing, describing the narrative as a politically driven attempt to tarnish his reputation. Addressing Nigerians, he stressed that at no point has any local or international security agency, government institution, or private body ever accused or investigated him for supporting terrorism. He emphasized that his record shows years of legislative and institutional work aimed at combating terrorism, not enabling it.

He referenced the military source whose comments were widely circulated, noting that even the officer clarified he never accused Malami of sponsoring terrorism. Instead, the officer spoke broadly about business interactions involving individuals under scrutiny and did not connect Malami to any such dealings. The former Attorney-General argued that the distortion of this statement into misleading headlines has fueled unnecessary confusion and hostility.

Malami described the situation as a coordinated political move engineered by opponents seeking to weaponize speculation for personal gain. He reiterated that terrorism sponsorship is a grave crime that requires hard evidence and the outcome of a lawful investigation, not assumptions, rumours, or manipulations of unrelated office interactions.

Reflecting on his tenure as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, he highlighted his efforts to reinforce Nigeria’s counter-terrorism framework, including supporting the full operational independence of the NFIU, strengthening anti-terror financing regulations in 2022, and deepening cooperation among domestic and international partners. He noted that these reforms contributed to Nigeria’s removal from the FATF “grey list,” demonstrating alignment with global standards and contradicting any notion of complicity in terrorism activities.

He dismissed attempts to twist normal government interactions into allegations, affirming that public engagement is part of institutional responsibility and never an indication of wrongdoing. He condemned any effort to associate his name with terrorism-related offenses and maintained that such claims have no factual grounding and run contrary to his record of service, legislative reforms, and commitment to national security.

In a Stone Reporters’ remark, similar politically charged accusations in past election cycles have frequently been debunked after proper scrutiny, reflecting a recurring pattern in which high-profile figures become targets of strategic misinformation during periods of heated competition.

A professional observation indicates that Malami’s response appears aimed not just at denial but at reframing the discourse by anchoring his defense in verifiable institutional achievements, a move likely intended to steady public perception amid a fast-spreading narrative.

He concluded by affirming his dedication to the rule of law and his continued commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s integrity and security.
