At least eight people have lost their lives in a devastating road accident that occurred opposite Unity Bank along Zaria Road in Jos, the Plateau State capital. The incident, which took place earlier today, has left commuters and residents in shock.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes following the collision, with several vehicles mangled and victims trapped inside. One witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “I saw the vehicles collide violently, and people were screaming for help. It was horrifying. Some victims were thrown out of their vehicles, while others were trapped inside. It was a scene of complete panic.”
Emergency responders were quickly deployed to the scene. Several injured persons were immediately transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Despite the rapid response, eight fatalities have been confirmed.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest that speeding and reckless driving may have contributed to the accident. A spokesperson for the Plateau State Traffic Command said, “Our officers are on the ground managing the situation and conducting investigations to establish the exact cause of this tragedy. We appeal to motorists to observe traffic regulations and exercise caution, especially on busy roads like Zaria Road.”
Residents expressed concern over the recurring nature of road accidents in Jos. “We have been calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better road infrastructure for years,” said Alhaji Musa, a local trader. “Sadly, it seems nothing is being done, and innocent lives continue to be lost.”
The Plateau State Government is yet to release an official statement, but sources confirm that officials are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with emergency services.
This accident highlights the urgent need for improved road safety measures, including better road maintenance, public awareness campaigns, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws, to prevent further loss of life in the state.
