Kano authorities have intercepted and seized 4,920 bottles of beer that were allegedly smuggled into the state in violation of its alcohol prohibition laws. The seizure followed a coordinated night operation by operatives of the Kano State Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), who impounded three trucks transporting the alcoholic beverages.

Officials said the operation was carried out after intelligence reports indicated that the trucks were attempting to move the drinks into Kano under the cover of darkness to evade detection. KAROTA personnel intercepted the vehicles at different entry points into the city before escorting them to the agency’s headquarters.

A senior KAROTA official, who confirmed the development, said the trucks and the confiscated alcohol have been handed over to the Kano State Hisbah Board, which is responsible for enforcing the state’s moral laws and will carry out the destruction of the beer.

“This operation was part of our routine surveillance to enforce state laws and prevent the circulation of prohibited items,” the official explained. “We acted on credible intelligence, and our personnel moved swiftly to stop the trucks. The items have now been transferred to Hisbah for the necessary action.”

The Hisbah Board is expected to conduct a public destruction exercise in line with its mandate, a practice that has become routine in the state where the sale and consumption of alcohol are banned under Sharia-based regulations.

Residents around the area where the trucks were intercepted said the nighttime operation caused brief traffic disruptions but praised authorities for acting swiftly and without confrontation.

The state government has reiterated its stance on enforcing existing laws regulating moral conduct, warning transporters and distributors against attempting to bring alcoholic beverages into Kano.

Further investigations are expected to determine the suppliers, transporters and intended distribution network within the state.
