Awka, Anambra State — In a remarkable display of civic courage, Nicholas Nweke, a suspected armed robber, was apprehended following a confrontation with a resident in Awka during the late hours of December 25, 2025. The timely intervention of operatives from the Anambra State Police Command, attached to the Central Police Station (CPS) Awka, ensured the suspect was disarmed and taken into custody, preventing further escalation and potential loss of life.
Authorities reported that the suspect approached a victim demanding his phone and other valuables. Upon the victim’s refusal, Nweke allegedly fired several shots, with pellets injuring two bystanders. Both individuals were swiftly taken to a nearby hospital and are currently in stable condition, responding positively to treatment. The victim’s bravery in confronting the suspect was instrumental in restraining him until police arrived.
During the arrest, officers recovered a pump-action rifle, five expended cartridges, one Itel mobile phone, and a cash sum of ₦1,200. The items were secured as evidence, and the suspect was handed over to the authorities for further action.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Nweke had previously been involved in criminal activities, prompting police to emphasize the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in crime prevention. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The Anambra State Police Command, through SP Ikenga Tochukwu, Police Public Relations Officer, commended the victim for his courage and underscored the critical role of citizens in supporting law enforcement to maintain peace and security during the festive season. Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station to prevent criminal incidents.
