KANO, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kano State Command, has removed the Fagge Divisional Officer from her post following the death of a suspect while in custody at the divisional office, prompting a formal handover of officers to the police for further investigation.

According to a statement from the NSCDC’s Public Relations Officer in Kano, SC Amina Musa Kolawale was relieved of her duties after a panel of inquiry was convened to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of the detainee during a recent custody incident at the Fagge divisional facility. All officers and men who were on duty at the time have been handed over to the Kano State Command of the Nigeria Police to allow for an independent investigation and any necessary legal action, the statement said.

The command’s appeal for calm emphasised its commitment to the sanctity of human life, respect for human rights, professionalism, integrity and the rule of law in carrying out its duties. A replacement divisional officer, CSC Bashir Isa Abubakar, has been deployed to Fagge Division to ensure continuity of operations while the probe continues.

The removal follows public concerns and allegations that the man who died in custody had been subjected to treatment that contributed to his death, sparking protests and calls for accountability within the community. Authorities have assured the public that the ongoing policing and investigative processes are aimed at providing a discreet and transparent examination of events leading to the suspect’s death.

The NSCDC said the handover of officers to the police is intended to ensure an unhindered inquiry, with those found culpable to be held accountable according to the law. Throughout the process, the corps has reiterated its dedication to upholding procedures that protect individuals’ rights and maintain public trust.
