MOWE, OGUN STATE — The Ogun State Police Command has apprehended three individuals in Mowe in connection with alleged conspiracy and unlawful possession of a human skull, an unusual and alarming discovery that has drawn attention from residents and authorities alike.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, the suspects were arrested on January 8, 2026, after police received information leading them to the location where the individuals were found in possession of the skull. The arrests were confirmed on Friday, with Lagos-based media reporting details of the operation. The suspects were reportedly traced to their residence in Mowe after being suspected of perpetrating the crime elsewhere but living in the area.
Following their arrest, the trio was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where they are now being held pending further investigation. Police said the investigation will seek to determine the source of the skull and the suspects’ involvement or connections to any criminal networks or related offences.
The Ogun State Command’s actions follow previous high-profile arrests across the region involving illegal possession of human parts, which have occasionally been linked to alleged ritual activities or other criminal conduct. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to thoroughly investigate the present case, emphasising that offences involving human remains are taken seriously under Nigerian law.
Ogun residents have expressed surprise and concern over the discovery, reflecting broader anxieties about criminality involving human remains and the alleged activities of ritualists or cult groups in parts of the state over recent years. The police command has assured the public that the suspects will be held to account as the investigation unfolds and that measures will be taken to ensure that similar activities are prevented in the future.
