Gusau, Zamfara State — The Chairman of Gusau Local Government Area, Abubakar Imam, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Islamic cleric Malam Zainu AB Mada by armed bandits, expressing profound sorrow and solidarity with the bereaved family and community.
Malam Zainu was kidnapped by suspected bandits along the Kotorkoshi–Mada road in Zamfara State and later killed despite his family meeting the ransom demands, which included ₦2 million in cash, two mobile phones and ₦70,000 in airtime. The tragic outcome of the abduction has sent shockwaves through communities along the notorious highway, which has been plagued by recurrent attacks and insecurity.
In a condolence visit to the family on Friday, Chairman Imam, accompanied by Ibrahim Liman, the lawmaker representing Gusau 2 Constituency at the State House of Assembly, sympathised with relatives of the fallen cleric and prayed for divine mercy upon his soul. He described the killing as a senseless and reprehensible act that underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to address insecurity in rural areas.
Imam emphasised that the tragic death of Zainu — who was widely respected in his community — reflects the escalating brutality of bandit attacks in parts of Zamfara State, which have seen frequent abductions, killings and ransom extortions. He urged security agencies to intensify operations along vulnerable routes and in hinterland settlements to prevent further loss of lives and to reassure citizens who live under persistent fear of attacks.
The funeral prayer for Malam Zainu was held on Thursday in his hometown of Mada, drawing hundreds of mourners who lamented his untimely death. Local residents reiterated calls for improved protection on major roads and increased patrols to deter criminal gangs that continue to operate with impunity.
Chairman Imam’s condemnation aligns with growing public frustration over the frequency and severity of banditry in Zamfara and across northwest Nigeria, where communities have endured repeated assaults despite ongoing government and security interventions.
