Katsina, Nigeria — Residents of Kitibawa community in Makera Ward of Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area, Katsina State, were thrown into panic on Sunday afternoon after suspected bandits carried out a brazen daylight attack, looting property and terrorising the area before fleeing.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that four armed bandits arrived in the community on a motorcycle, moving swiftly to areas where residents were charging their mobile phones. The assailants reportedly forced people to surrender their phones without resistance, exploiting the fear their presence generated.

After dispossessing residents of their phones, the bandits proceeded to a nearby fuel seller, where they allegedly took fuel without payment. Locals said no one challenged them, as the attackers were visibly armed and appeared ready to use force.

Witnesses further disclosed that as the gunmen exited the community, they fired two gunshots into the air, triggering widespread panic and causing residents to flee into nearby homes and bushes for safety. The gunfire, according to residents, underscored the attackers’ confidence and the vulnerability of the area to such raids.

Moments later, the bandits intercepted a civilian on the outskirts of Kitibawa and forcefully seized his motorcycle. They then escaped from the area, using the stolen motorcycle to aid their getaway.

Residents expressed deep concern over the incident, noting that the attack occurred in broad daylight and highlighted the growing boldness of armed groups operating across Katsina State. Community members lamented the absence of security personnel at the time of the attack and called on authorities to strengthen patrols, particularly in rural communities that have become frequent targets of banditry.

The incident adds to a series of attacks reported across Katsina State in recent months, where bandits have continued to loot, kidnap and intimidate residents with little resistance. Locals fear that without sustained security presence and rapid response, such attacks may become even more frequent.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the Katsina State Police Command regarding the attack. Residents, however, are urging security agencies to investigate the incident, recover the stolen motorcycle and phones, and take decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.
