Reports from Kotonkoro community in Mariga Local Government Area (LGA), Niger State, indicate that Nigerian Army troops successfully engaged armed bandits in intense confrontations at the Mailaka axis, neutralising several terrorists and reclaiming control of the area.
This engagement marks the second clash with the same group of insurgents, following a prior confrontation at the Lioji axis the previous night. Residents of Kotonkoro praised the troops for their courage, resilience, and tactical professionalism, noting that their decisive actions prevented further attacks on local communities.
Security sources confirmed that the operations involved coordinated patrols and intelligence-led ambushes, aimed at dismantling the bandits’ hold in the area and securing vulnerable villages. While the exact casualties among the bandits were not disclosed, residents reported a significant decrease in armed activity following the operations.
Community leaders have commended the Nigerian Army’s sustained presence, urging continued vigilance and collaboration between security forces and locals to maintain safety in Mariga LGA. They emphasized that proactive military interventions are crucial to restoring normalcy and preventing future attacks by bandit groups operating across the region.
The Army has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, stating that operations will continue until all threats in Kotonkoro and surrounding communities are neutralized.
