A devastating road accident occurred along the Kaduna–Abuja Expressway near Good Shepherd Major Seminary in Kaduna State, resulting in multiple fatalities and serious injuries. The incident took place on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, which connects the federal capital with northern states and is known for its high traffic volume and history of dangerous crashes.
Preliminary reports indicate that multiple vehicles were involved, with at least one losing control before colliding with others. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find vehicles severely damaged, with victims trapped inside. Rescue teams worked quickly to extract those injured and transport them to nearby hospitals, while the deceased were confirmed at the scene by first responders. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with twisted metal and debris scattered across the highway. Some survivors were attended to by bystanders before emergency teams arrived. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, focusing on factors such as vehicle speed, driver fatigue, road conditions, and compliance with traffic regulations.
The Kaduna–Abuja Expressway spans approximately 155–200 kilometres and serves as a major route for commercial and passenger traffic. Its reputation for accidents has prompted repeated calls from authorities for motorists to adhere to speed limits, maintain their vehicles, and avoid fatigue while driving. Recent years have seen government campaigns to improve road safety, including increased patrols, traffic enforcement, and public awareness initiatives.
The crash near Good Shepherd Major Seminary has brought renewed attention to the dangers faced by travelers along this highway, which has also been affected by security challenges in the past. Authorities have appealed to witnesses and surviving passengers to provide statements to aid the ongoing investigation. They also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when traveling along the corridor, especially during peak hours and long-distance journeys.
The Federal Road Safety Corps emphasised that adherence to safety regulations, proper vehicle maintenance, and responsible driving are critical to reducing the frequency and severity of accidents on the Kaduna–Abuja route. Efforts to improve infrastructure, emergency response capabilities, and driver education continue, but incidents like this highlight the ongoing risks for commuters and the urgent need for sustained interventions.
As investigations continue, local communities, families of the victims, and road users remain anxious for updates and hope for swift medical attention for the injured. Authorities are expected to release a detailed report on the crash, including contributing factors and recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
