Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a traditional ruler following the discovery of a prohibited firearm, in a development that has heightened concerns about the circulation of illegal weapons within coastal communities and the broader implications for internal security in southern Nigeria.
The suspect, identified as Chief Edet, is the village head of Asik Ubofa, a fishing settlement located in the Effiat Clan of Mbo Local Government Area. According to police authorities, the arrest followed actionable intelligence suggesting that the 60-year-old community leader was in possession of an illegal firearm. Acting on the information, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, ordered an immediate and coordinated operation to verify the claim and take necessary action.
Detectives were subsequently deployed to the area, where they conducted a targeted operation at the suspect’s residence. The operation led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle along with two empty magazines.
