Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a traditional leader after recovering a high-powered firearm, marking a significant enforcement action to curb illegal gun possession in the state.

The suspect, Chief Edet, the village head of Asik Ubofa, a fishing settlement in Effiat Clan of Mbo Local Government Area, was apprehended by detectives following credible intelligence that he was unlawfully in possession of a prohibited firearm. The arrest took place on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, and led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle along with two empty magazines at his residence.

The state police command’s Public Relations Officer stated that the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, directed a coordinated operation after receiving the intelligence. Detectives swiftly executed the operation, arrested Chief Edet, and recovered the firearm and magazines. An investigation has since been launched to trace the origin of the weapon, determine the motive for its possession, and identify any possible accomplices.

Police described the arrest as a significant operational breakthrough in efforts to intercept and disarm individuals illegally holding firearms. Illegal possession of such weapons has been linked to crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, and communal clashes. The arrest of a village head has drawn particular attention due to the expectation that community leaders uphold peace and safety.

Residents of Asik Ubofa expressed surprise at the arrest, describing the village head as a stabilizing figure in the community. Some neighbours questioned how he came to possess the weapon, while others called for a transparent investigation to determine whether he acted alone or as part of a wider security threat.

The police command emphasized that illegal possession of firearms is a serious offense under Nigerian law and carries heavy penalties. The recovered AK-47 and magazines will serve as key evidence in court proceedings once formal charges are filed.

The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to tackle the spread of illegal weapons across the South-South region of Nigeria. Authorities have warned that possession of military-style weapons without proper licensing will not be tolerated, regardless of the individual’s status or position in society.

Community members have appealed for calm as the investigation continues, stressing the importance of due process while ensuring that justice is served. Security analysts note that illegal possession of military-grade weapons by non-state actors poses a major threat to public safety, and this case highlights the need for stronger community policing and vetting of local leaders.

As investigations proceed, Chief Edet is expected to be charged under the relevant provisions of the Nigerian Firearms Act and other applicable criminal laws. The police command has assured the public that all ongoing operations aim to safeguard residents and reduce illegal arms in circulation.
