Deep sorrow has gripped the Potiskum community and neighbouring towns after a devastating accident on the Damaturu–Maiduguri highway claimed the lives of five members of a single family, leaving several others injured and raising serious concerns about road safety in the region. He noted that several other occupants of the vehicle suffered varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital in Damaturu, where they are receiving treatment. The deceased have been identified as members of the Zayi family: Hajjagana Dahiru Zayi, Ibrahim Dahiru Zayi, Muhammad Dahiru Zayi, Hauwa Dahiru Zayi, and another relative whose name has not been publicly released. Community members say the victims were well-known locally, and their sudden deaths have sent shockwaves through Potiskum and surrounding areas.
Preliminary reports suggest the accident may have been caused by a loss of vehicle control, though police have not yet confirmed the exact trigger.
