A prominent legal practitioner, Tope Temokun, has formally petitioned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Ondo State Attorney-General, and the leadership of the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, over a disturbing incident in which a local woman, Mrs. Oladipupo Taiwo, was allegedly assaulted by operatives of the corps while buying fuel in Akure. The petition, issued publicly by Temokun in his capacity as Principal Counsel of Tope Temokun Chambers, calls for urgent action to address what he describes as a blatant violation of fundamental human rights, demanding accountability, justice, and systemic reforms within the security outfit.

According to Temokun’s petition, submitted to the Office of the Governor, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and the Commander of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, Mrs. Taiwo was subjected to excessive and brutal force during an encounter with Amotekun personnel at a filling station. The legal complaint alleges that the assault was so severe that it nearly left the victim blind, leaving her with significant physical and emotional trauma and prompting widespread concern among residents.

The petition stresses that the assault, which resulted in injuries requiring medical attention, appears to be without reasonable justification and reflects a troubling pattern of indiscipline among some members of the Amotekun Corps. In his public statement, Temokun described the alleged conduct of the security operatives as incompatible with their statutory mandate to protect life and property, uphold the rule of law, and respect the rights of ordinary citizens.

Temokun’s petition seeks a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, urging Governor Aiyedatiwa and the state’s top legal officer to ensure that all responsible officers are held to account through appropriate disciplinary and legal processes. It also calls for the immediate return of personal items seized from Mrs. Taiwo during or after the incident. In addition, the petition demands that she be provided with adequate medical care and compensation for the harm suffered.

Beyond addressing the individual case, Temokun’s action underscores broader concerns about operational conduct and oversight within the Amotekun Corps. The petition explicitly calls for structural reforms aimed at curbing abuse and indiscipline among operatives, including enhanced training on human rights observance and stronger internal accountability mechanisms. These measures, the lawyer argues, are essential to restore public confidence in the security outfit and to ensure that its members do not become a source of insecurity for the communities they are meant to protect.

The alleged assault on Mrs. Taiwo has elicited reactions from civil society actors and human rights advocates who have previously raised concerns about the need for oversight of non-police security formations. While Amotekun was established across the six states of southwestern Nigeria with the mandate to assist in combating crime and enhancing safety, there have been periodic reports from communities about incidents involving excessive use of force or misconduct by operatives.

In his statement accompanying the petition, Temokun emphasised that no security operation, regardless of perceived urgency or threat, should override the constitutional rights of citizens to dignity, safety, and due process. He urged the state government to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves and to demonstrate a zero-tolerance stance towards human rights abuses by any security personnel, whether federal, state, or community-based.

Governor Aiyedatiwa’s office and the leadership of the Ondo State Security Network Agency have yet to issue official responses or public comments on the petition. Observers in the state’s legal and human rights communities are watching closely, anticipating whether the government will take decisive steps to investigate the allegations and implement reforms that could prevent similar incidents in the future.

The case highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s efforts to reform and strengthen internal security mechanisms, particularly those created at the state level. As Amotekun continues to play a visible role in the region’s security architecture, incidents such as this petitioned case are likely to intensify discussions about the balance between effective security operations and the imperatives of human rights protection. Advocates maintain that accountability and transparency in security governance are critical for fostering trust between communities and the institutions tasked with their protection.
