In a solemn demonstration of leadership and compassion, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, on Monday morning visited the community of Angwan Rukuba in Jos North Local Government Area following a devastating attack that occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026. The brazen act of violence claimed numerous lives and left many others injured, plunging the community into profound grief and mourning.

Arriving amid palpable sorrow and distress, Governor Mutfwang described the incident as deeply painful, tragic, and wholly unacceptable. He offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed solidarity with all residents affected by the violence. “This is a painful moment for all of us. Angwan Rukuba is a community that accommodates people from diverse ethnic backgrounds across Plateau State. Therefore, this is not the pain of a few—it is the pain of all of us,” the governor said, underscoring the shared anguish felt across the state.

Governor Mutfwang assured the grieving community that the perpetrators of the heinous attack would be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice. With resolute conviction, he pledged that no effort would be spared to ensure accountability and to prevent a recurrence of such acts. His visit was both a demonstration of government commitment and a call for collective resolve in the face of terror.

In a compassionate and dignified promise to the families of the victims, the governor announced that the state government would ensure proper and individual burials for all those who lost their lives. “We will not allow mass burial. Government will work closely with the families to give each victim a befitting burial. They did not deserve to die in such a manner,” he affirmed, stressing that dignity in death is a fundamental expression of respect for human life.

Governor Mutfwang further disclosed that the Plateau State Government would assume full responsibility for the medical treatment of all injured victims until they make complete recoveries. “For those currently receiving treatment, government will bear the full cost of their medical care,” he said, signaling the state’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens, especially in times of crisis.

Appealing for calm and restraint, the governor directly addressed the youth and broader community, urging residents not to take the law into their own hands. He emphasised that peace, restraint, and cooperation with security agencies are critical to restoring normalcy and advancing justice. “I urge you all to remain calm. The greatest honour we can give to the departed is to remain peaceful and allow due process to take its course,” he said, urging unity over retaliation.

Governor Mutfwang provided updates on ongoing security efforts, revealing that one suspect linked to prior threats had already been arrested. He added that security agencies were intensifying efforts to apprehend other perpetrators involved in the attack. The governor reassured citizens that both state and federal authorities, including the President of Nigeria, are fully engaged and committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the broader security of the region is strengthened.

During the visit, a community leader, Comrade Samson Chiroma, speaking on behalf of residents, recounted the harrowing attack. He described how the assailants appeared in military‑style attire, heightening concerns about the brazenness and sophistication of the violence. Chiroma appealed to governmental authorities to act swiftly, ensure justice for the victims, and facilitate proper burial arrangements, noting that the community remains in deep mourning and shock.

Reaffirming his administration’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property, Governor Mutfwang declared that Plateau State would not yield to forces seeking to destabilise its peace and cohesion. He also called on community leaders and residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information that could help prevent future occurrences. This call to collective vigilance was framed as vital to the long‑term safety of the region.

As part of his response to the tragedy, the governor directed that the bodies of the deceased be evacuated to the mortuary, with consultations ongoing with families and stakeholders to ensure dignified burials and sustained efforts toward justice and lasting peace. He also visited victims receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he offered prayers for their speedy and full recovery, comforting relatives and hospital staff alike with personal words of empathy and encouragement.

The governor’s visit to Angwan Rukuba reflected the gravity of the incident and the urgency with which the state leadership is responding. It also highlighted the importance of solidarity in times of shared suffering, as well as the delicate balance between pursuing justice and preserving peace.

The tragic attack has drawn widespread attention not only for its brutality but also for the unity it has prompted among community members and state authorities. Residents have expressed both grief and resilience, determined to support one another and to work with government and security forces to prevent further violence.

As investigations continue and the state intensifies efforts to secure the area and apprehend all those responsible, Governor Mutfwang’s visit serves as a reminder of the human cost of insecurity and the imperative for cohesive action. His commitment to justice, dignified burial arrangements, and comprehensive medical care for victims reflects a governance approach centred on empathy, accountability, and collective responsibility.

In the days ahead, the people of Plateau State and observers alike will be watching closely to see how the government and security agencies translate these promises into concrete outcomes, ensuring that peace is restored and that the memory of those lost in the tragedy is honoured with justice and lasting tranquillity.
