In a major security development that underscores ongoing efforts to tackle crime in southwestern Nigeria, the Western Nigeria Security Network, Amotekun, has paraded 35 suspects detained for alleged involvement in crimes ranging from kidnapping and theft to human trafficking and attempted rape across Ondo State. The event, which took place at the Amotekun command headquarters in Akure, the state capital, marks a continuation of intensified security operations in the region following a series of arrests and rescue efforts in recent months.

The parade was announced by Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, the state commander of the Amotekun Corps, who described the arrests as part of intelligence-driven patrols conducted over the course of a week throughout the state’s 18 local government areas. According to Adeleye, the detained individuals are suspected to be engaged in a range of serious offences that have affected public safety in both urban and rural communities. Among those presented were individuals allegedly involved in multiple kidnapping cases, breaches of law and order including theft and violent conduct, suspects in human trafficking, and persons linked to attempted rape. All remain in custody pending ongoing investigations.

In one of the human trafficking cases, the corps detailed how some suspects reportedly defrauded a victim of a significant sum of money with the promise of overseas employment and visa assistance. The victim was allegedly held captive for about two weeks before escaping and reporting the ordeal to Amotekun operatives. Security forces were subsequently able to recover the money and the victim’s travel documents, returning them safely to their family. Adeleye noted that the kidnappings linked to the suspects were spread across various communities in the state, including both the Akure metropolitan region and several of the outlying local government areas. He emphasised that these arrests were made possible through sustained mobile patrols, community intelligence, and tactical coordination within the corps’ operational strategy.

The Amotekun commander also reiterated the positive impact of a night-time ban on commercial motorcycle operations, a measure introduced to curb the opportunity for criminals to exploit poorly lit roads and isolated areas during late hours. Since implementation, many motorcycles have been impounded for operating in violation of the ban. In addition, tens of thousands of riders have been registered under the state’s regulatory framework, with registration ongoing. Authorities have warned that further enforcement actions will continue and that defaulters face sanctions as prescribed by law.

This latest high-profile arrest of 35 suspects forms part of a more expansive pattern of security crackdowns in Ondo State by Amotekun operatives. Over the past year, the corps has publicly paraded and detained large numbers of suspected criminals in multiple operations. Earlier operations also saw dozens of suspects detained in cooperation with federal agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services in a coordinated push against criminal networks across the state. Such joint efforts signal increasing collaboration between Amotekun and national security institutions.

Beyond recent weeks, Amotekun’s campaigns have seen varied success. Earlier in the year, the corps arrested multiple suspects on charges including kidnapping, theft, attempted murder, and violations of anti-grazing laws. These activities underscore the persistent challenge of violent crime, rural insecurity, and community vulnerability in Ondo and surrounding states. Previously, the outfit also detained individuals suspected of armed robbery, burglary, rape, human trafficking, and other offences. Several of those suspects included persons who had escaped custody from state facilities and re-engaged in criminal conduct before being re-apprehended by Amotekun operatives. Such cases have highlighted the complex nature of security challenges, especially where escaped prisoners or organised networks are able to regroup and continue criminal enterprises.

State and local stakeholders have credited community cooperation with amplifying the impact of Amotekun’s operations. Commander Adeleye has consistently urged residents to provide credible intelligence, noting that many arrests stemmed from actionable tips from vigilant citizens. This aligns with a broader strategy adopted by the corps since its establishment in 2020, whereby mobilising local knowledge and networks complements conventional enforcement tools in deterrence and response efforts.

Despite these efforts, challenges persist. Some communities continue to grapple with crime waves, especially in agricultural zones and border areas that are more difficult to patrol consistently. Analysts note that socio-economic conditions, transport infrastructure, and uneven law enforcement capacity contribute to these ongoing threats. Still, the visible presence of Amotekun units and their recurrent arrests have lifted public confidence in several areas.

The 35 suspects currently paraded will undergo further legal review, and where sufficient evidence exists, formal charges will be filed in appropriate courts of jurisdiction. Security officials have stated that investigations remain open and additional arrests can be expected as intelligence continues to guide operations. Adeleye has reiterated that criminal elements should disengage from unlawful activities and that the corps remains committed to protecting lives and property throughout Ondo State.

As Amotekun sustains momentum in community-driven security enforcement, residents and civil society groups urge continued consistency, accountability, and strategic coordination with federal law enforcement agencies, a combination seen as critical to long-term stability and public safety in the region.
