Residents of Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State were plunged into mourning after a nine-year-old girl lost her life in a fatal road accident involving a heavy-duty truck over the weekend. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, 29 March 2026, around Supare Junction on Supare Road, a busy stretch where large vehicles frequently operate.
The victim, identified as Fatima Ibrahim, was reportedly walking near the junction when she was struck by an unregistered Mercedes-Benz tipper truck. Emergency responders rushed her to a nearby medical facility, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that the truck driver had been apprehended. The vehicle has been secured for inspection as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances that led to the collision.
The police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, expressed deep sorrow over the fatality and extended condolences to the bereaved family. He reassured the public that a thorough investigation would determine the contributing factors, which could include driver error, vehicle malfunction, or road conditions, and that justice would be pursued.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of shock and grief. Local residents said the truck appeared to lose control near the junction, striking the child before bystanders could intervene. The incident has reignited concerns about road safety, particularly on routes heavily used by commercial vehicles and trucks.
Community leaders have called for urgent measures to improve traffic regulation, enforce vehicle roadworthiness standards, and create safer pedestrian access. Residents expressed frustration that poorly maintained and unregistered trucks operate on major roads, putting vulnerable pedestrians, especially children, at risk.
Road safety advocates emphasise the need for more visible safety measures, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and public awareness campaigns to prevent similar tragedies. They highlight that children are disproportionately affected in road accidents and require greater protection.
The incident also underscores broader challenges facing motorists and pedestrians across Nigeria, including poor road infrastructure, speeding, driver fatigue, and inadequate vehicle maintenance. Without sustained regulatory enforcement and road safety measures, such tragedies are likely to continue.
Authorities have urged all road users to adhere to traffic laws, maintain safe vehicle operations, and exercise heightened caution on dangerous junctions like Supare Road. The ongoing police investigation will clarify the cause of the collision and determine the appropriate legal action against the driver.
The community continues to mourn the loss of Fatima Ibrahim, urging state and local authorities to implement stronger safety measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
