Gunmen killed three people, wounded several others, and set fire to houses, food stores, and livestock in a deadly raid on Dangoro village in Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nigeria, in one of the latest episodes of armed violence affecting the northwest region. The attack occurred in the late hours of March 28, 2026, sowing fear among residents and underscoring the ongoing security challenges faced by local authorities.
According to a statement from Yazid Abubakar, spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, heavily armed assailants entered Dangoro via the Nahuche District around 10:30 p.m. They opened fire on villagers and set multiple homes and grain silos ablaze, also destroying livestock, which many families rely on for both income and sustenance.
Three people were killed in the attack, including a member of the Community Protection Guard, a local vigilante group formed to support security efforts in rural areas. Five people were reported to have sustained gunshot wounds, while four others suffered burn injuries as a result of the fires. Those injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, the state capital, where they are receiving treatment.
Security forces, including police officers and local vigilantes, were dispatched to the village following the attack. The joint team engaged the gunmen in a firefight, eventually forcing them to flee into the surrounding bushland. Officials believe some of the attackers may have been wounded during the clash, although no arrests had been made at the time of reporting.
The Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Muhammad, reiterated the commitment of security agencies to protecting lives and property. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and assist with any information that could help apprehend the perpetrators.
