A middle‑aged man identified as Malime Sunday Ejor, 35, has been arrested and is under investigation for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Moshie Lucy Igu, 26, in Cross River State, in a case that has sparked outrage among residents and renewed calls for justice and protection for vulnerable individuals in relationships marked by conflict.

According to police and local sources, the incident occurred on March 28, 2026, in the early hours of the morning at a farm in Nwang Village in the Ekajuk community of Ogoja Local Government Area. The couple had reportedly gone to the farm together when an argument erupted over allegations that the victim had been unfaithful. The disagreement quickly escalated.

Eyewitnesses say Ejor attacked Igu with a machete during the dispute. She was reportedly taken to a nearby stream close to the farm, where he inflicted fatal cuts on her before she succumbed to her injuries. Neighbouring residents, drawn by the sounds of the commotion and alarmed by the violence, rushed to the scene but were unable to prevent the fatal assault.

Fearing that the suspect might escape or become a target of vigilante action, local youths quickly intervened. They reportedly seized Ejor as he attempted to flee the area and handed him over to arriving security personnel. Angry residents had gathered and threatened to inflict mob justice before police operatives arrived and took custody of Ejor to ensure his safety and preserve the integrity of the investigation.

The Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed that Ejor is currently in police custody. He said that officers responded promptly to reports of the killing and arrested him at the scene before transferring him to secure detention. The police have emphasised that a thorough investigation is underway to determine all circumstances surrounding the incident, including motive and any prior history between the victim and the suspect.

Police also indicated that the victim’s remains are yet to be taken to the General Hospital Mortuary in Ogoja, as necessary arrangements for the transfer and autopsy are being finalised. Following preliminary investigations, the case file is expected to be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further forensic analysis and detailed inquiry.

The killing has provoked strong reactions from members of the Ekajuk community and human rights observers, many of whom have demanded justice and called on authorities to ensure that the legal process is followed. Residents expressed shock over the brutal nature of the incident and lamented what they described as an avoidable tragedy of domestic violence that escalated into lethal force.

Activists and community leaders have used the incident to highlight broader issues of domestic conflict, violent disputes, and the need for effective support systems for individuals in strained relationships. Calls have intensified for public education on conflict resolution, mental health support, and greater awareness of legal protections available for victims of threatened or actual violence.

Domestic violence and gender‑based killings remain serious concerns across many parts of Nigeria, with police and civil society urging more robust prevention measures and swift legal action against perpetrators of lethal violence. In this case, authorities have reiterated that Ejor will be charged as investigations progress and that the full weight of the law should apply should he be found guilty.

As of the latest reports, Ejor remains in detention while investigations continue, and the community awaits further developments in what has become a high‑profile case in Cross River State. Police have pledged to provide updates and to work with prosecutors toward bringing the case to court once a complete dossier is compiled.
