Kampala, Uganda — A tragic incident occurred on Thursday at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program in Makindye Division, Kampala, where a man attacked young children inside a kindergarten, killing four of them. The suspect has been apprehended by security forces, and authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack.
The suspect, identified as Christopher Okello, reportedly gained access to the kindergarten by posing as a parent interested in enrolling his child. After briefly speaking with the school administrator, he entered a classroom where around 14 children were present, locked the gate, and began attacking the children with a sharp weapon. Four children, aged between two and three years, died at the scene.
Teachers at the centre raised the alarm, and a nearby security guard intervened, preventing further harm before police arrived. Residents gathered outside the school, visibly distressed, and initially attempted to take the suspect from authorities, prompting police to fire warning shots to maintain order and secure Okello.
Okello was taken into custody and remains detained as the investigation continues. Police have not yet established a clear motive for the attack and are conducting forensic examinations, witness interviews, and background checks to understand the circumstances fully. Authorities have appealed to the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation.
The Inspector General of Police visited the scene to oversee the investigation and urged calm among residents. The bodies of the deceased children were taken to a city mortuary, while the remaining children present were reunited with their families.
Community leaders and parents expressed shock at the attack, calling for stronger security measures at schools and childcare facilities. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about child safety in educational environments in Kampala and prompted discussions on how to prevent such incidents in the future.
Authorities pledged support for the affected families and assured the public that the suspect would face justice. The investigation continues, with officials expected to release more details as it progresses.
