Awka, Nigeria — Anambra State’s Special Anti‑Touting Squad conducted a major enforcement operation on Thursday, targeting multiple hideouts across the state and destroying illicit drugs valued at approximately ₦80 million. The action is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal drug networks, improve public safety, and curb crime linked to substance abuse.

The raids covered several communities known for criminal activity, including Nsugbe in Anambra East, Umuchu in Aguata, Ojoto and Oba in Idemili South, Nkpor in Idemili North, Nkwelle‑Ezunaka in Oyi, and key areas within the commercial city of Onitsha. These operations followed days of intelligence gathering to trace illegal drug supplies and storage locations believed to fuel criminal activity.

During the raids, officials seized large quantities of illegal substances and destroyed them publicly to prevent re‑circulation and send a clear message about the state’s zero‑tolerance stance on drug trafficking and touting. Authorities described the exercise as a significant demonstration of their commitment to protecting communities from drug-related harm.

The Managing Director of the Special Anti‑Touting Squad explained that the operation was based on credible intelligence and was aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in drug distribution. He emphasized that drug dealers endanger public health and safety, noting links between substance abuse, theft, and violence within communities.

Residents and community leaders welcomed the raids, praising the decisive action and calling for continued enforcement to deter repeat offences. Many highlighted that illegal drug markets threaten young people and contribute to wider social problems, including addiction and insecurity.

The operation aligns with broader security and public safety strategies pursued by the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo. Officials stressed that collaboration between law enforcement and communities, including reporting suspicious activities, is essential for maintaining safety and reducing crime.

The raid reflects a shift toward intelligence-driven operations that target the sources of illicit drug distribution rather than solely focusing on arrests. Public destruction of seized drugs aims to deter traffickers and reinforce the importance of creating drug-free environments for youth and families.

While the state unit led this enforcement effort, national agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency continue to conduct similar large-scale anti-narcotics operations across Nigeria, intercepting significant quantities of illegal substances and apprehending suspects.

Authorities reiterated that sustained vigilance, strategic intelligence, and cooperation between the government and residents are key to reducing crime and ensuring public health and safety in Anambra State.
