Oyo State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected notorious kidnapper and the recovery of a military‑style firearm in a significant breakthrough for security operations in the state. The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, who detailed the events leading up to the arrest and the ongoing efforts to dismantle armed criminal networks operating in the region.
According to the police account, the operation was triggered after credible intelligence was received from a vigilant member of the public who reported that three armed men were seen moving around forests and farmland in the Ikoyi‑Ile area of Oyo State carrying dangerous weapons. Acting on the tip‑off, a coordinated team of police operatives, alongside other security agencies, mobilised rapidly and conducted a meticulous search of the bushy terrains in the area, ultimately leading to the arrest of one suspect.
The suspect, identified as Muhammadu Abubakar, was taken into custody during the operation. From him, officers recovered an AK‑47 rifle with breach number 6628/2274, along with six rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition and three live cartridges — weapons often associated with organised kidnapping and violent crime.
In their detailed statement, the police disclosed that Abubakar confessed during interrogation to involvement in a series of kidnapping activities along the Ogbomoso–Ikoyi‑Ile axis, a corridor that has experienced increased reports of abductions and violent attacks in recent months. The suspect reportedly admitted to being part of a wider criminal network and has been cooperating with ongoing investigations.
