Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Tension spread through the Diobu neighbourhood of Port Harcourt on Easter Sunday after a young man was fatally shot in what security officials have described as a violent clash between rival cult factions. The incident, which occurred along Abakaliki Street in the Mile 1 area, was confirmed by the Rivers State Police Command, which linked the killing to an intra-cult rivalry among members of a notorious secret society active in the community.
Witnesses and residents described scenes of panic as gunfire erupted, prompting people to flee for safety. According to investigators, the victim, whose identity has not yet been established, had just left a nearby shop where he had gone to buy bread when assailants in a vehicle opened fire on him. The sudden violence disrupted Easter celebrations and created fear among locals as the attackers fled before security forces arrived.
Security sources said the clash stemmed from a long-running conflict between rival factions of the Deybam cult group, which has been linked to periodic violence in Port Harcourt’s urban communities. The confrontation reportedly involved members of the group’s sub-factions, whose rivalries encompass territorial control, influence, and personal disputes.
One source indicated that the incident may have been sparked by a disagreement over a young woman, which quickly escalated due to existing tensions between the sub-factions. As the dispute intensified, gunmen allegedly opened fire, fatally wounding the victim.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident and said the Commissioner of Police has ordered an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators. Additional patrols were deployed in the Mile 1 Division and surrounding areas to prevent retaliatory attacks and reassure residents. Police are actively gathering evidence, canvassing witnesses, and reviewing available surveillance footage to identify those responsible.
Local residents expressed shock and dismay, noting that such violence disrupts daily life in an already high-risk area. Diobu, a densely populated and commercially vibrant district, has long contended with armed robbery, gang activity, and cult-related violence, prompting repeated calls for stronger community policing and proactive law enforcement.
Business owners and commuters reported closing shops and avoiding streets temporarily after the shooting, citing fear of further violence. Civic leaders and community advocates urged cooperation with police, enhanced intelligence gathering, and preventive measures to address the socio-economic factors that drive youth into cult affiliations, including unemployment and lack of opportunities.
Security analysts observed that the incident highlights the persistent threat posed by intra-cult rivalries in parts of Rivers State. Analysts emphasize that a combination of law enforcement, community engagement, and socio-economic interventions is essential to reducing both the frequency and severity of such clashes. Authorities are encouraged to balance enforcement with trust-building measures in the community to prevent recruitment into cult groups.
As investigations continue, residents await further updates from police regarding the identity of the victim, arrests, and progress in ensuring lasting peace in the Diobu community. Police have appealed to members of the public with credible information to assist with ongoing inquiries.
