ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — Detectives of the Ajuwon Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 25‑year‑old man in connection with a brutal early‑morning knife attack in the Olámbe community that claimed the lives of two people and left three others fighting for their lives, authorities confirmed.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 7 April 2026, at about 1:38 a.m., police received distress calls reporting a violent assault in Olámbe, a neighborhood in Ogun State where residents were awakened by the sounds of a frenzied stabbing. Officers who rushed to the scene discovered that a man, later identified by police as Abubakar Musa ‘M’, had attacked a group of civilians with a knife following a dispute linked to failed business transactions. Law enforcement sources say that the victims had attempted to reason with him before the violence erupted.

According to the police, Musa stabbed five people during the incident. Two of the victims — 25‑year‑old Gbadamasi Ibrahim ‘M’ and 40‑year‑old Chinedu ‘M’ — succumbed to their injuries while being transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff confirmed their deaths. The other three victims — 35‑year‑old Mohammed Abubakar ‘M’, 25‑year‑old Ashiru Adamu ‘M’, and 25‑year‑old Paul Lawrence ‘M’ — were critically wounded and remain under medical care, with doctors reporting that they are responding to treatment.

Following the assault, the suspect fled the scene but was later tracked down and apprehended by detectives. He is currently held in custody as the police continue their investigation into the motivations behind the attack and prepare to prosecute. The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Abeokuta for further examination and legal action.

The attack has shaken the Olámbe community, where residents described the violence as sudden and shocking. Neighbors of the victims expressed deep sorrow and called on authorities to ensure that justice is served for those killed and wounded in what many described as an avoidable tragedy.

The Commissioner of Police for Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, condemned the act as senseless violence and emphasized the police’s commitment to upholding law and order. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour that could threaten community safety.

To encourage community cooperation, the Ogun State Police Command reiterated its emergency contact numbers, including the toll‑free Gateway Shield line (0800 000 9111) and other emergency numbers, which residents can use to report crime or threats to safety.

This incident comes amidst ongoing efforts by Nigerian law enforcement to curb violent crime in Ogun State, a region that has seen a mix of criminal activity ranging from disputes escalating into deadly confrontations to unrelated violent incidents. Last week, the police in Ogun State arrested a different individual in connection with the stabbing death of a customer during a dispute over a ₦25,000 debt in the Agbado area of Ifo Local Government, illustrating a broader concern about violence linked to interpersonal conflicts and economic disputes. In that case, 37‑year‑old Opeyemi Olaniyan was apprehended after allegedly stabbing a 27‑year‑old man, Ayomide Oyekunle, with a broken bottle inside a bar — a conflict that also resulted in death and prompted an autopsy order by police.

Authorities emphasize that incidents of this nature are taken seriously and that comprehensive investigations are underway to not only apprehend suspects but also to identify patterns that could inform preventive strategies. Police leadership also stressed the importance of community engagement in deterring crime and ensuring public safety.

Analysts note that conflicts arising from business disagreements, debt disputes, and personal grievances sometimes escalate into violence in communities across southwestern Nigeria and that intensified policing, community watch initiatives, and accessible reporting channels are critical tools in preventing such episodes.

For now, the focus remains on the ongoing investigations surrounding the Olámbe stabbings and the health and recovery of the wounded victims. Police have assured the public that charges will be brought against the suspect once the investigation is complete and that legal steps will follow to hold him accountable in accordance with Nigerian law.

As this story continues to develop, authorities have pledged transparency and close coordination with judicial authorities to ensure that justice is served and that the families of the victims receive closure.
