ABIA, Nigeria — Two years after his son’s death under troubling circumstances at a hotel swimming pool in Umuahia, the father of late Air Force cadet officer Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyeomereneche has intensified his call for justice, accusing security authorities of burying the case in silence despite forensic evidence suggesting foul play.

On the eve of the second anniversary of his son’s death on April 9, 2024, Mr. Ephraim Onyeomereneche spoke with journalists in Umuahia, expressing deep frustration and disappointment with what he described as a lack of meaningful action by both the Nigerian military and the Nigeria Police Force. He said that despite an autopsy that appeared to contradict earlier official accounts, no suspects have been prosecuted and no transparent conclusions have been reached about how his son died.

Emmanuel Onyeomereneche, a cadet at the Nigerian Defence Academy nearing the end of his training, was reported missing at the Hotel Royale Damgrate in Umuahia on the evening of April 9, 2024, while on leave with friends. Police initially described the incident as an accidental drowning in the hotel’s swimming pool. The state police spokesperson confirmed the recovery of his body from the pool later that night, and investigators said an inquiry was ongoing.

The young cadet’s body was later buried in his home community amid mourning by family, friends and well‑wishers. At the funeral, many attendees voiced concern about the circumstances of his death and called for a thorough investigation.

However, months after the incident, a medical autopsy report dated August 18, 2024, which was shared with the public, did not support the drowning narrative. The panel of pathologists, led by senior medical experts, concluded that the cause of death was not consistent with drowning or poisoning, but instead pointed to blunt force trauma to the head and skeletal injuries consistent with violent impact and a skull fracture. According to the autopsy, the injuries were sufficient to cause sudden unconsciousness and death.

Despite these findings, Mr. Onyeomereneche says that no formal criminal investigation has been pursued, and that security authorities have allowed the case to stagnate. He has openly questioned whether the Army and the police have deliberately stalled the process or shielded individuals who might be implicated in the events leading up to his son’s death. He also expressed disappointment at the absence of commentary or pressure from political figures in Abia State, noting that the tragic incident occurred just opposite the Government House in Umuahia.

The father has alleged significant gaps in the official narrative and has raised questions about the conduct of his son’s colleague who was reportedly present at the hotel on the night of the incident. He said that the colleague, who initially went with Emmanuel to the hotel, has remained largely unaccounted for in subsequent accounts and has not provided clarity on key aspects of the events that unfolded. Relatives and acquaintances have also questioned why emergency responders and divers did not intervene more rapidly once the cadet was reported missing, and why personal belongings such as phones and clothing were left behind near the pool, adding to the family’s doubts about the drowning explanation.

Adding to the complexity of the story, the owner of the Hotel Royale Damgrate later made public allegations that military personnel may have mistreated and even caused the death of hotel staff in relation to the case. According to the hotel owner, some staff members were detained and interrogated by soldiers after Emmanuel’s death, with one hospitality manager reportedly dying in the process. The Nigerian Army publicly acknowledged the allegations and said it had ordered a comprehensive internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding both the cadet’s death and the subsequent treatment of staff.

These conflicting narratives have left many in the community and across Nigeria seeking clearer, verified answers. Family members, human rights advocates, and some legal observers argue that the lack of transparency and accountability in this case erodes public confidence in institutions tasked with safeguarding lives and enforcing the law. They have called on the military, police and relevant government agencies to release full investigative findings and to take appropriate legal action if foul play is confirmed.

Supporting the father’s demand for justice are broader concerns about how deaths involving military personnel are investigated in Nigeria. Civil society groups have previously highlighted cases where investigations into the deaths of service members or civilians linked to security agencies have been slow, opaque, or inconclusive, prompting calls for reform and greater oversight.

In response to the renewed calls for action, representatives of the Nigerian military and the Police Force have so far maintained that investigations are ongoing, but have not provided detailed public updates on progress or outcomes. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to due process, yet the family and its supporters remain dissatisfied with the pace and depth of official responses.

As Emmanuel Onyeomereneche’s second death anniversary passes, his father continues to demand answers, pressing for a comprehensive, unbiased investigation that will identify those responsible and lead to justice. The unresolved nature of the case, along with competing accounts of what transpired, has left lingering questions about the circumstances surrounding the cadet’s death and whether institutional accountability will be achieved.

With the family’s determination undiminished, the case remains a focal point for discussions about transparency, rule of law and the rights of service members and their families. The father has appealed to civil society organisations, legal experts and the wider public to support his quest for justice, emphasising that true closure can only come through clarity, accountability and the rule of law.
