The Benue State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the brutal killing of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Benjamin Msughaondo Une, who was beaten to death by a mob over a motorcycle he was falsely accused of stealing. The incident occurred late Sunday night, between 11:00 p.m. and midnight, at Major Settlement, near the Buruku Local Government Secretariat in Buruku Local Government Area of the state. According to police spokesperson DSP Edet Udeme, the deceased, a corps member serving in Gombe State who had returned home for a short holiday, was intercepted by a group of hoodlums who accused him of stealing a motorcycle. Without any attempt to verify the allegation, the mob descended on him, beating him severely until he became unconscious. He was later rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Udeme confirmed that preliminary investigations revealed that the accusation was entirely false. Documents recovered from the victim proved that he was the legitimate owner of the motorcycle. The two suspects arrested in connection with the crime have been identified as Terkimbi Abumswende and Joshua Adagim, while a third suspect remains at large. The police spokesperson assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.

The Chairman of Buruku Local Government Area, Honourable Raymond Aondoakura, has condemned the killing, describing it as a grave violation of justice and human dignity. In a statement, he reiterated that the security of lives and property remains a priority and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. He disclosed that all individuals involved have been apprehended by security agencies and directed that a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution be carried out. He also announced the immediate suspension of all vigilante operations in the area, stating that the groups have been disbanded pending the establishment of proper regulatory measures. “This unfortunate act does not in any way represent who we are as a people. It is a grave violation, and it will not be tolerated,” Aondoakura said. He extended condolences to the deceased’s family, the people of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, and the management of the NYSC, noting that the loss is a painful blow to the nation.

The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers of jungle justice, where mobs act on mere suspicion, often leading to the loss of innocent lives. The family of the deceased has appealed for calm and urged the police to expedite the investigation. The NYSC has also expressed condolences and confirmed that the victim was a serving corps member deployed to Gombe State, with only a few weeks left before his final clearance. As the investigation continues, the two suspects remain in police custody awaiting arraignment, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect.
