The Zamfara Community Protection Guards (ZCPG) have arrested a suspected arms courier allegedly linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji after intercepting ammunition concealed inside a jerrycan in Zamfara State.
According to reports shared by security-focused local sources, the suspect was apprehended while transporting the ammunition reportedly sourced from Nasarawa State and destined for Zamfara. Authorities said the interception was carried out during an operation by the state-backed community security outfit.
Initial accounts indicate the ammunition had been hidden inside a jerrycan in an apparent attempt to avoid detection during transit. Officials have not publicly disclosed the quantity or calibre of the recovered ammunition.
The identity of the suspect has not been formally confirmed by state authorities, and no official court charge has yet been announced at the time of reporting.
The arrest highlights ongoing concerns over illicit arms supply routes feeding armed groups operating in northwestern Nigeria, where Zamfara remains one of the states most affected by bandit attacks, kidnappings, and rural violence.
Bello Turji is widely identified by security agencies and multiple reports as one of the most prominent bandit leaders operating across Zamfara, Sokoto, and neighbouring areas. He has repeatedly been linked to violent attacks and mass abductions in the region.
The Zamfara Community Protection Guards were established by the state government to support conventional security agencies through local intelligence gathering, patrols, and rapid response operations in vulnerable communities.
There has been no immediate official statement from the Nigeria Police Force or military authorities regarding the latest arrest. Further investigation is expected to determine the suspect’s alleged network, route, and intended recipients of the ammunition.
