The Umuchukwu Progressive Union (UPU) has declared that the Supreme Court of Nigeria’s ruling affirming the change of the community’s name from Nkerehi to Umuchukwu is final, irreversible, and binding on all parties. In a statement issued on behalf of the union, the President General, Chief Adinchezor Chukwuemeka, warned that any covert or overt attempt to revert to the former name, Nkerehi, would fail because the law is clear and the apex court’s decision represents the highest legal authority on the matter. The ruling, which upheld a government gazette recognising Umuchukwu, brings to an end a protracted dispute that had divided the community for years.
Chief Chukwuemeka, who described himself as “very proactive,” told journalists that the Supreme Court had conclusively settled all controversies surrounding the identity of the community. “The verdict of the Supreme Court of Nigeria has come to stay. It is not subject to further debate or manipulation. Any surreptitious effort to return to the old name Nkerehi will fail because the law is clear and binding,” he said. He traced the transition to due democratic process, noting that a referendum had been conducted and overwhelmingly supported by community members. That decision, he added, was subsequently validated through all levels of the judiciary, culminating in the Supreme Court’s affirmation.
The name dispute had its roots in a long‑standing disagreement between factions within the community over which appellation properly reflected the identity of the people. Proponents of Nkerehi argued that the name carried ancestral significance, while supporters of Umuchukwu maintained that the change was necessary to align with historical facts and modern administrative realities. The state government, after a formal inquiry, issued a gazette recognising Umuchukwu, a decision that was challenged in court. After years of litigation, the Supreme Court upheld the gazette, effectively putting the matter to rest.
On the question of traditional leadership, the UPU reaffirmed that the election of Kenneth Maduka as the traditional ruler of Umuchukwu remains valid, lawful, and binding. Chief Chukwuemeka said the process that produced Igwe Maduka was conducted in line with established guidelines and under the supervision of relevant authorities from the Anambra State Government, including officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters. “The election of Igwe Kenneth Maduka remains a settled matter. It was free, fair, and conducted under government supervision. The mandate given to him by the people is clear and cannot be undermined by dissenting voices,” he stated.
The UPU’s declaration comes amid lingering opposition from some quarters who have refused to accept both the name change and the new monarch. Chief Chukwuemeka warned that those who continue to sow discord are acting in vain. He called on residents and stakeholders to disregard what he described as misleading narratives aimed at creating confusion, urging the community to remain united and focused on development. With the legal affirmation of its name and the recognised leadership structure in place, Umuchukwu is poised to continue its progress under a stable and lawful traditional institution.
Reactions from within the community were mixed. Some elders who spoke on condition of anonymity expressed relief that the litigation was finally over, while others maintained that the Supreme Court’s decision, though binding, did not erase the emotional attachment to the old name. However, the majority of the community appears to have accepted the verdict, and local government authorities have already begun referring to the area as Umuchukwu in official correspondence.
Legal experts have noted that the Supreme Court’s ruling sets a precedent for similar name disputes in other communities, underscoring the principle that once a government gazette is issued and upheld by the highest court, it becomes the definitive legal identity. The UPU’s insistence on finality is therefore not merely rhetorical but grounded in the binding nature of the apex court’s judgment.
Chieftaincy matters in Anambra State have often been a source of intense conflict, with parallel claims and violent clashes not uncommon. The relatively peaceful resolution of the Umuchukwu dispute, though marked by legal battles, stands as an example of how due process and judicial intervention can settle traditional leadership crises. The UPU has now called on all indigenes, whether at home or in the diaspora, to support Igwe Maduka’s administration and to work together for the development of the community.
The statement from the UPU also served as a warning to any individuals or groups who might consider challenging the status quo through clandestine means. Chief Chukwuemeka made it clear that the union would not tolerate any attempt to destabilise the community, and that the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on those who try to undermine the Supreme Court’s verdict. For now, the people of Umuchukwu can look forward to a period of stability, with a clear name and a recognised traditional ruler to lead them into the future.
