The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a woman for allegedly attacking her 15‑year‑old daughter with a knife in the Opeki area of Ayobo, following a viral video that caused widespread public outrage.
The incident occurred at 32 Tashoro Street, near Ipaja in Lagos State. Disturbing footage posted on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as @Dir_Martinsz showed the woman in a yellow shirt straddling the teenager while holding a knife above her after reportedly beating her near the entrance of a residential compound.
The video caught neighbours intervening, pleading with the mother to stop and eventually restraining her, with an elderly resident seen retrieving the knife from her. According to the X user who shared the clip, “A 15‑year‑old is mistreated and abused by her mother. And stab the 15‑year‑old girl”. The user also noted that as the mother was about to deliver a “final strike,” neighbours stepped in to prevent the assault.
Reacting swiftly, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed the suspect’s arrest on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. In a statement, the command announced that the affected children have been rescued and safely handed over to the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development for proper care, protection, and necessary welfare support.
The police also assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing and that the suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. The community, however, remains in shock, with one neighbour recounting, “We heard screams and rushed in. What we saw was terrifying. If we hadn’t stepped in, it could have been worse”.
Another resident described the suspect as “habitually abusive toward the teenager”. The incident has sparked widespread calls for stronger protection of vulnerable children and has added to growing concerns over domestic abuse in Nigeria. As of Thursday, April 30, the Lagos State Government has not yet issued a detailed official statement beyond the police’s announcement.
