A pall of grief has enveloped the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Maiduguri, Borno State, following the death of a newly arrived corps member, Lovina Bamaiyi Ajegena, who passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, just six days into the mandatory three‑week orientation programme. The deceased, whose identity was confirmed by fellow corps members, reportedly fell ill shortly after registration, and despite efforts to save her, her condition worsened rapidly. The tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of tributes on social media and reignited calls for improved healthcare infrastructure within NYSC camps nationwide.
According to a heart‑wrenching account shared on Facebook by a fellow corps member, Augustine Pamela, she and Lovina had met by chance at a motor park while arranging transport to the camp.
They travelled together, registered together, and were assigned the same room and bunk space. “We did everything together simply because we came together and everyone thought we were close friends, some even called us sisters,” Pamela wrote. Their connection deepened as they navigated the rigours of camp life. However, about six days into the programme, Lovina became seriously ill.
Pamela, who became her primary caregiver, described in vivid detail the toll the illness took on her friend. “I had to help her to the bathroom, feed her, clean her body, and stay awake at nights to make sure she is alright. She would call out to me in pain and say thank you after every help I render to her. She would hold my hands firmly and refuse to let go, like she is trying her best to hold unto life itself.” In a cruel twist, Pamela also fell ill and was admitted to the same hospital, where they shared a ward. “This connection has to be fate,” she wrote. While Pamela eventually stabilised, Lovina’s condition deteriorated. On the morning of April 27, at about 7:03 a.m., she died.
The exact cause of death has not been officially disclosed by the NYSC management or health authorities. Medical details surrounding the illness remain unknown as of the time of this report. The NYSC headquarters is yet to issue a formal statement on the incident, though it is customary for the scheme to conduct internal investigations into fatalities occurring within its orientation camps.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the corps member community, with many taking to social media to express their grief and demand better emergency response systems in orientation camps.
A fellow corps member who wished to remain anonymous told this reporter, “We are thrown into this environment with minimal medical oversight. If someone falls critically ill, there is often a delay in getting them to a proper facility. Lovina’s death should serve as a wake‑up call.”
The Maiduguri orientation camp is one of the NYSC’s high‑risk locations, situated in a state that has been the epicentre of a 17‑year insurgency. The camp has, in the past, faced security challenges but has also been lauded for its resilience. However, health emergencies remain a recurring concern. In February 2026, Kwara State had to debunk rumours of a Lassa fever outbreak at its NYSC camp after a corps member with a pre‑existing chronic illness died outside the camp.
Augustine Pamela’s emotional tribute to Lovina has been shared thousands of times, with many praising her devotion to a near‑stranger. “Many applauded my efforts, calling me a friend indeed but deep down I was confused on whether we were friends or not. We were just two strangers intertwined by fate,” Pamela wrote. In a painful confession at the end of her post, she added, “My beloved. I didn’t get to tell you, but I have fallen in love with you. And I wished we got the chance to be friends forever. Maiduguri camp gave you to me and Maiduguri camp took you from me. Till we meet again, Lovina.”
The NYSC has not responded to multiple requests for comment. Meanwhile, family members of the deceased are yet to issue a public statement. The body of Lovina Bamaiyi Ajegena has been deposited at a mortuary pending arrangements for burial. As her friend and her loved ones mourn, a dark cloud hangs over the camp that was meant to be the starting point of a year of national service, but has now become the scene of an irreplaceable loss.
