Fresh tension has gripped parts of Riyom Local Government Area following reports that suspected bandits attacked Gwa-Rim and Rim communities on the night of May 8, 2026, killing at least three youths.
According to local reports, the attack reportedly occurred around 10:26 p.m. when armed assailants invaded the affected communities, triggering panic among residents. Community sources said the victims were youths from the area, although their identities had not been officially released at the time of reporting.
The incident has heightened fears across Riyom LGA, an area that has repeatedly witnessed violent attacks, killings and communal tensions over the years. Residents reportedly fled parts of the communities during the assault as fears of further attacks spread.
Reports surrounding the incident also indicated that the Berom Youth Movement had earlier raised concerns about possible attacks on vulnerable communities within the area. According to information circulating locally, the group’s leadership had allegedly sent a warning letter drawing attention to an impending security threat affecting some communities, including the areas attacked.
A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Berom Youth Movement, Comrade Vincent Caleb Alamba, reportedly condemned the latest attack and called for urgent security intervention to protect residents and prevent further loss of lives.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not officially confirmed the casualty figures or released a detailed statement regarding arrests, rescue operations or the identities of those behind the attack.
Riyom and several other parts of Plateau State have experienced repeated security crises involving armed attacks, reprisals and communal violence, with residents frequently calling for stronger protection and improved security response in rural communities.
The latest killings come amid renewed concerns over persistent insecurity in Plateau State, where communities continue to face attacks despite ongoing security operations by military and police authorities.
Residents and community leaders have continued to urge both state and federal authorities to intensify surveillance, deploy additional security personnel and strengthen intelligence gathering in vulnerable areas across the state.
