Fresh violence has again rocked Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State following a deadly overnight attack that reportedly claimed multiple lives, including those of vulnerable residents such as a pregnant woman, a nursing mother and a three-year-old child.

According to reports from local sources and community leaders, suspected bandits attacked Ngbra-Zongo village in Bassa LGA during the late hours of Thursday night, triggering panic and fresh fears across surrounding communities.

Initial reports indicated that at least 11 people were killed during the assault, although official casualty figures were still being clarified at the time of reporting. Community members said the victims included women and children, with eyewitnesses describing scenes of destruction and confusion following the attack.

The incident is the latest in a series of recurring attacks affecting parts of Plateau State, particularly communities within Bassa, Riyom, Barkin Ladi and Mangu local government areas where residents have repeatedly faced killings, displacement and armed assaults.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International condemned the latest killings, warning that repeated attacks across Plateau communities continue to expose residents to insecurity and humanitarian suffering. The organisation urged Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to protect civilians and hold perpetrators accountable.

Residents of the affected community reportedly fled their homes during the attack as gunfire spread across the area. Local leaders and youth groups have continued to express frustration over what they describe as recurring attacks on rural communities despite ongoing security operations in the state.

The killings have also renewed concerns over the vulnerability of women and children during violent attacks across Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, where rural communities have repeatedly suffered casualties during armed invasions.

Plateau State has experienced prolonged insecurity linked to armed banditry, communal violence and attacks by gunmen over the years. Security analysts note that several affected communities remain vulnerable due to difficult terrain, weak security presence and slow emergency response capabilities.

In recent months, there have been repeated reports of deadly attacks in Plateau communities involving civilians, farmers, vigilantes and local residents. Earlier incidents in Barkin Ladi and other areas also recorded deaths involving pregnant women and other vulnerable victims.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not released a comprehensive official statement detailing arrests or operations linked to the latest Bassa attack. Community members have continued to call on both federal and state authorities to strengthen security deployments and prevent further violence in vulnerable communities.
