The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed a police sergeant, Osayingbemi Temitope, who was captured in a viral video behaving erratically in public while under the influence of hard drugs. The incident sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over substance abuse within the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force.

On the afternoon of May 9, 2026, residents of Ikole-Ekiti witnessed a disturbing scene: a uniformed police sergeant was seen rolling on the ground, clutching and embracing a bench, and acting erratically in a public area. A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, showing the officer in distress, with his behaviour widely attributed to the effects of a psychoactive substance, suspected to be the synthetic drug known as “Colorado.”

The Ekiti State Police Command immediately identified the officer as Sergeant Osayingbemi Temitope (also identified as Temitope Osanyingbemi in some reports), who was attached to the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters. He was arrested and taken into custody at the command headquarters to face an internal inquiry. The Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, ordered the sergeant to undergo psychological and medical evaluations before the commencement of disciplinary proceedings.

The psychological evaluation concluded that the officer was “emotionally stable,” but the medical test revealed traces of tobacco and amphetamine in his system. During further questioning, the sergeant confessed to having taken some illicit drugs.

The command concluded its internal disciplinary procedures and found the officer guilty of misconduct. He was recommended for dismissal, and the recommendation was upheld. The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed the dismissal of Sergeant Osayingbemi Temitope with immediate effect on May 15, 2026.

The Inspector‑General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, condemned the sergeant’s actions as a “gross deviation” from the discipline and decorum expected of the force, reaffirming the institution’s zero‑tolerance policy for substance abuse. The Ekiti State Command’s spokesperson, SP Sunday Abutu, stated that the force “remains a disciplined organisation and will not tolerate any act of indiscipline, unprofessional practice or any act that could ridicule the image of the Force.” CP Falade charged all officers of the command to uphold discipline, professionalism, accountability, and integrity in the discharge of their duties.
