Nigeria has secured one gold and one silver medal in the relay events at the African Athletics Championships, with a record-breaking performance in the women’s 4x100 metres and a close second-place finish in the men’s event.

In the women’s 4x100m relay, the Nigerian quartet of Rosemary Nwankwo, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu produced a championship-record run of 42.94 seconds to win gold. The time set a new championship benchmark and marked the first time a women’s team has gone under 43 seconds in the competition’s history.

The race saw Nigeria finish ahead of Liberia, who took silver, while Ghana secured bronze. The performance further strengthened Nigeria’s long-standing dominance in African women’s sprint relays and added to their growing medal tally at the championships.

In the men’s 4x100m relay, Nigeria’s team of Favour Ashe, James Taiwo Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin and Chidera Ezeakor delivered a strong performance but finished second with a time of 38.70 seconds.

They were narrowly beaten to gold by Ivory Coast, who ran 38.52 seconds to claim the title in a tightly contested final that went down to the closing stages.

The results reflect Nigeria’s continued strength in sprint relay events at continental level, particularly in women’s athletics, where the country has consistently produced podium finishes in recent championships.

The African Athletics Championships continue through the week, with Nigeria expected to compete in additional track and field events as they aim to further increase their medal count.

Stone Reporters note that the relay results add to Nigeria’s broader performance trend in African athletics, where the country remains one of the leading sprint nations on the continent.
