The Bauchi State Government has confirmed the death of Alhaji Shehu Yahaya Jalam, the Permanent Secretary for Special Services in the Office of the Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, who died in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, during the ongoing 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.

Jalam died in the early hours of Sunday after a brief illness while participating in the pilgrimage alongside other members of the Bauchi State contingent in Saudi Arabia.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, who described the development as a painful loss to the state government and the people of Bauchi.

According to the statement, the late official, who held the traditional title of Turakin Dawakin Misau, was part of the Bauchi delegation for the 2026 Hajj exercise when he became ill.

The state government said Jalam served as a dedicated public servant and had participated actively in government assignments, including Hajj operations involving Bauchi pilgrims.

Leadership newspaper reported that Jalam was serving as chairman of the Information and Publicity Committee for the 2026 Hajj operation organised by the Bauchi State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board. The report also stated that he coordinated accommodation arrangements for Bauchi pilgrims and served as Secretary of the Feeding Committee during the exercise.

A coordinator attached to the Bauchi State Hajj team, Sabiu Barau Ningi, told Leadership that the deceased had initially complained of illness after arriving from Madinah and later received treatment before his condition worsened.

The report stated that Jalam later died at Al-Noor Hospital in Makkah.

The Bauchi State Government further stated that funeral prayers for the deceased were conducted on Sunday after the Zuhr prayer at the Holy Mosque in Makkah.

Governor Bala Mohammed, in the condolence message, extended sympathies to the deceased’s family, colleagues, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Civil Service, as well as the Misau and Dambam emirates.

The governor also prayed for Allah to forgive the late official’s shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

No official medical report detailing the exact cause of death had been publicly released as of Sunday evening.
