A 36‑year‑old man, Kunle Akinlose, was stabbed to death with a broken bottle during a birthday party in the Ado‑Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State in the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026, after an argument escalated into a violent physical confrontation. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at a bar along Ayetoro Road, where a herbal drink seller was celebrating her birthday. According to the Ogun State Police Command, the suspect, identified as Damilola Fagbemi, 31, allegedly stabbed the victim with a broken bottle during a fight at Abato Bar, Ifesowapo Bus Stop, Ayetoro Ota. The police confirmed that a report was made at the Ayetoro Budo Division at about 6:10 a.m. on the same day.

Eyewitnesses told PUNCH Metro that the trouble began when the suspect had an altercation with the bar owner and allegedly attempted to attack him alongside some of his friends. The victim, who stepped in to prevent the assault, found himself drawn into the fray. A community source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the suspect became aggressive after people told him that the victim had done nothing wrong. “When he wanted to attack the bar owner, the victim stepped in to calm the situation and stop them from beating the man,” the source said. The confrontation later degenerated into a physical fight during which the deceased allegedly overpowered the suspect.

The situation escalated further when the suspect broke a bottle, while the victim reportedly brought out a knife. Some persons at the scene intervened and seized the weapon from the victim. “People separated them and collected the knife from the victim, but the suspect still held the broken bottle. The victim probably thought the fight had ended. He suddenly came back and stabbed him with the bottle. The injury on his hand was very deep,” the source narrated.

The victim, bleeding profusely, ran into another bar in search of help. An eyewitness identified as Ela told PUNCH Metro that the victim received makeshift first aid from a woman who brought out a handkerchief to tie his bleeding hand. He then waited for a motorcycle to take him to the hospital, but most riders refused because of the amount of blood. “When they finally got one and he entered, I guess it was already too late because of the bleeding. He slumped, started shaking, and died before getting to the hospital,” Ela said.

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing. Authorities are making efforts to apprehend the suspect, who reportedly fled the scene after the attack. Community members and an anti‑cultism advocacy group, NaijaConfra, have linked the victim and suspect to cult affiliations. One community source disclosed that both men were members of the same cult group, while NaijaConfra, in a Facebook post, alleged that the area was dominated by members of the Eiye cult, noting that the victim and suspect were members of the same confraternity. The group also provided a different account of the trigger for the fight, claiming that the suspect became angry after seeing his girlfriend having a conversation with the bar owner. According to NaijaConfra, it was the suspect’s girlfriend who approached the bar owner, not the other way around, but the suspect nonetheless confronted the bar owner and began oppressing him.

The Ogun State Police Command has not yet announced any arrest, and the search for Damilola Fagbemi continues.
