Residents of Oke Egan in the Ilogbo‑Eremi area of Badagry, Lagos State, have been thrown into shock after the body of a grandmother, Mrs Victoria Adegoke, was discovered naked in a nearby bush with visible marks of strangulation. Community sources who spoke with journalists on Sunday, May 17, 2026, alleged that the 68‑year‑old woman was ambushed, raped, and strangled by unidentified hoodlums while returning home from a church programme in the early hours of Friday, May 15. The deceased had been attending a multi‑day programme at The Joy of Christ Ministry, also known as Ayo Jesu Church. She had stayed with a sibling near the church after the programme ended and was reportedly attacked around 6:10 a.m. on her way home.

According to a community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the incident, the victim’s hands appeared to have been tied, and her clothes and underwear had been removed. Photographs obtained by journalists showed what appeared to be rope marks on the victim’s wrists. The assailants also stole her mobile phone, but her ATM card and Bible were recovered at the scene. “The deceased is someone I know. Her daughter stays abroad. She went to church last Tuesday and had been there for some time because they were holding a programme that ended four days ago,” the source told reporters. “She later stayed with one of her siblings who lives close to the church. It was while she was returning home around six in the morning that she was reportedly attacked. The suspects removed her clothes and underwear. They strangled her and also took her phone. Her ATM card and Bible were found at the scene.”

Another resident, who identified himself only as Adeola, described the incident as shocking and questioned why an elderly woman would be subjected to such brutality. “She should be between 65 and 68 years old. Passersby found her body inside the bush and reported the matter at the police post in Ilogbo‑Eremi. The police are aware of the incident and should be able to track the assailants through the woman’s stolen phone,” he said. A separate community member, who also requested anonymity for fear of attack, described the area as notorious for violent crimes, noting that the community lies along the boundary between Lagos and Ogun states and has a history of criminal activity. “This is not the first time such a crime has happened here. In fact, this would be about the fourth such incident reported in the area. The place is prone to violence, so people have to be careful. She was a grandmother, not a young woman. She was found naked, and it was when the police arrived that her body was covered. Her pants had been removed, which suggested she was raped,” the source said.

When contacted on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, did not respond to calls or a WhatsApp message sent to his line at the time of this report. As of Monday morning, the police had not issued any official statement on the incident or announced any arrests. This is not the first time a disturbing incident has been reported in Badagry. In November 2025, the corpse of an unidentified man was discovered in front of a filling station in the Seme area of the town. The discovery was first reported by CityMood Badagry, a local social media news platform. The deceased was found lying face‑up, wearing what appeared to be a white top with black stripes, with parts of his chest and neck visibly exposed.

The brutal attack on Mrs Adegoke has heightened concerns over insecurity in Badagry and surrounding communities, where residents say violent crimes and attacks have become increasingly alarming. The victim, who was in her late sixties and a grandmother, had been actively participating in church activities before she was killed. Her daughter, who resides abroad, has reportedly been contacted by family members, and arrangements are being made for her to travel to Nigeria. As of press time, no arrests have been made, and the search for the suspects continues. Residents have called on the Lagos State Government and the police to intensify patrols and surveillance in the area, warning that unless security is improved, more lives may be lost.

The incident has also reignited discussions about the safety of women, particularly elderly women, who may be seen as vulnerable targets by criminals. Women’s rights groups have condemned the attack and called for swift justice, urging the police to use modern investigative techniques, including tracking the victim’s stolen phone, to apprehend the perpetrators. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has not yet commented on the case, but it is expected to offer support to the victim’s family as the investigation unfolds.

In the absence of an official police statement, residents of Oke Egan and neighbouring communities are left to mourn and to fend for themselves. The brutal rape and murder of a grandmother who had only left her home to worship has become yet another grim reminder of the persistent insecurity that plagues parts of Lagos State. As the sun rose on Monday, the bush where Mrs Adegoke’s body was found lay silent, and her attackers remained at large.
