A Senior Magistrate Court in Kano State, northern Nigeria, has remanded a private school teacher, identified only as Uncle Kamal, for the alleged sexual abuse of four sisters who are pupils at the school where he taught. The horrific case first came to light in Inusawa, a community within the Ungogo Local Government Area of the state, when the children’s mother noticed that one of her daughters was bleeding from her private parts. According to prosecution counsel Badamasi Gandu, when she questioned the children, all four girls stated that their teacher had been sexually assaulting them. The victims, aged just seven, seven, seven, and five, have been identified as Hassana, Hussaina, Gambo, and their youngest sister.
All four sisters are students at Al-Hadeed Private School in the Ungogo area. After the mother raised the alarm, medical reports were obtained and confirmed that the children had indeed been sexually assaulted prior to the suspect’s arraignment. Lawyer Badamasi Suleiman, who confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Monday, May 18, 2026, added a chilling detail about the discovery. He stated that the mother’s suspicion was initially triggered when she noticed that one of her daughters could no longer control her bowels, a common physical symptom of severe sexual trauma in young children. Upon inquiry, all four girls made the devastating confirmation that their teacher, referred to as “Uncle Kamal,” had been abusing them.
The case has since been transferred to the formal judicial system. After a thorough investigation that the prosecution described as having gathered solid evidence, the teacher was formally arraigned. He appeared before Senior Magistrate Court No. 27 in the No-Man’s-Land district of Kano, where the court ordered his immediate remand in a correctional facility. The presiding magistrate has adjourned the matter for the continuation of the case, though there is a slight discrepancy in the reported date, with the court records indicating June 6, while other sources close to the case have cited June 9 as the next hearing date. Regardless, the suspect remains in state custody as the judicial process moves forward.
This disturbing incident has sent shockwaves through the local community in Inusawa and the wider Kano public. It has also brought renewed attention to the systemic issue of sexual violence in educational institutions across the region. The Kano State Government has consistently maintained a tough stance on such matters. In a series of official warnings issued just over a year ago, in April 2025, the government declared a zero-tolerance policy for sexual misconduct in schools. The state warned that “As an Islamic state, Kano will not fold its arms and watch our daughters suffer abuse and humiliation” and that any teacher who dares to violate a student “will be flushed out and prosecuted without delay”. Officials from the Kano State Ministry of Education were not immediately available for comment on Tuesday regarding this specific case, though it is understood that the ministry has been notified and is monitoring the proceedings.
The case also highlights the ongoing battle against child abuse in Nigeria. Data from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Kano has previously documented thousands of child rights abuse cases, with the majority of victims being under the age of 13. The legal framework to protect minors exists, including the Child Rights Act, but enforcement and prosecution often face hurdles, including societal pressure and a fear of victim blaming, which often leads to underreporting. However, in this instance, the mother’s swift action and the subsequent confirmation by medical professionals have ensured that the case has moved forward.
As the community reels from the allegations, the identities of the young victims have been fiercely protected. Meanwhile, the accused remains in custody, facing what will likely be a closely watched legal battle. With the case adjourned until early June, authorities have not yet released any official statement regarding the potential closure of Al-Hadeed Private School, though the institution is now at the center of a major scandal.
