The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of the traditional ruler of Ishinkwo Community, HRH Eze Josephat Nnanna Ikegwu, who was shot dead in his bedroom on the night of April 1, 2026. The arrests followed sustained intelligence-led investigations by operatives of the command, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The suspects were identified as Ucha Johnson, Ogobuchi Igwe, Nkpuma Nwankwo, Edwin Onwoshi, Itumo Joseph, and Emmanuel Nwaoba. During the operation, police operatives also recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with eight rounds of live ammunition, Ukandu said.
The late monarch was reportedly attacked by gunmen who stormed his residence in Ishinkwo, Onicha Local Government Area, under the cover of darkness. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants fired through a window before forcing their way inside and shooting the traditional ruler at close range in the presence of his wife. The brutal murder sent shockwaves through the community and heightened fears over the safety of traditional rulers in the state, coming just weeks after the abduction and gruesome killing of Eze Francis Igwe of Ndufu-Alike community in Ikwo Local Government Area. The latest killing brings to five the number of traditional rulers murdered in Ebonyi State in recent times.
Governor Francis Nwifuru, in a statement issued on April 2, 2026, condemned the murder as “barbaric and a direct assault on the peace, unity, and collective conscience of our dear Ebonyi State.” He directed security agencies to ensure the perpetrators were swiftly apprehended and brought to justice, assuring the people of Ishinkwo that no individual or group, “no matter how highly placed or connected, will be spared if found culpable.”
Reacting to the arrests, the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, reaffirmed the command’s determination to ensure that all individuals involved in the crime are brought to justice. She stated that “no individual involved in criminality will be allowed to evade justice” and assured residents that the command remains committed to ridding the state of violent crimes. The police said the suspects would be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The arrest of the six suspects and the recovery of the AK-47 rifle represent a significant breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of Eze Josephat Nnanna Ikegwu. The case highlights the growing challenge of targeted attacks on traditional institutions in Ebonyi State and the need for sustained security interventions. As the community awaits justice, the police have assured residents of their continued commitment to maintaining public safety across the state.
