The Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) regional leader in Plateau State, Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo, has mourned the brutal killing of a young couple who were murdered while shielding their newborn baby during a deadly attack in the state. The infant was later found alive by neighbours the following morning, according to a statement Dachomo made while speaking with journalists in Jos on Monday, May 25, 2026.

Dachomo, who was reacting to the latest wave of violence in Plateau communities, emotionally narrated how the mother and father died while protecting their child from the assailants. “Based on news reports, they found a mother dead while protecting her child. The father was also found dead beside them,” he said. “When day broke, they entered the house and discovered that the child was still alive.” He explained that the surviving baby, whose name and exact age were not disclosed, was later handed over to the Church by members of the affected community because the child constantly reminded them of the killings and trauma they experienced. “We have seen the work of the Holy Spirit throughout the community,” Dachomo said. “They allowed us to adopt the child because the child would always remind them of what happened in the community, making it difficult for them to forgive.”

The clergyman described the violence as “genocide” against Christians in Nigeria and alleged that terrorists responsible for repeated killings in communities across Plateau State have regrouped and relocated to different parts of the region, waiting for another opportunity to launch fresh attacks. He said that on the day of the attack, the community buried nine people, including the mother of the child, and five others in a mass grave. “That is the beginning of Christianity in Nigeria, genocide,” he added. Dachomo also expressed concern over the government’s stance on foreign military intervention, stating: “The government does not want America to send its soldiers to Plateau State. But the challenge is a tactical scheme extending toward the North-East, while some of them have relocated, waiting for the right time to strike again.” The attack is one of several violent incidents that have plagued Plateau State in recent months, prompting repeated calls from community and religious leaders for increased security measures and justice for victims.
