Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a 36‑year‑old man, Richard Gabriel, after recovering 36 rounds of live cartridges concealed in a bag during a routine stop‑and‑search operation at Guobadia Junction along the Benin–Auchi Road in Benin City. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, 28 May 2026, adding that the suspect was apprehended following a brief foot chase after he and two other passengers attempted to flee the scene.

According to the police, the incident occurred on 23 May 2026 at about 1:00 p.m., when officers attached to the Ikpoba Hill Area Command intercepted a minibus conveying seven passengers from the Benin–Auchi Bypass to Ring Road, Benin City. During the operation, three male passengers suddenly abandoned their belongings and bolted. The officers immediately gave chase and succeeded in arresting one of the fleeing suspects, identified as Richard Gabriel, from Ovia South‑West Local Government Area of Edo State. A search of his bag led to the discovery of 36 live cartridges hidden inside.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, commended the vigilance and professionalism of the officers involved, and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state. The arrested suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
