The Osun State Police Command has launched a full‑scale manhunt for a hit‑and‑run driver who killed two police operatives along the Osogbo/Gbongan Road in the Oogi community of Osun State. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, when the officers, identified simply as Kehinde and Tobi, were travelling on a motorcycle and were struck by a speeding Lexus car.
The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the development while speaking with journalists on Thursday, 28 May 2026. According to Ojelabi, the driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, abandoning the vehicle at the crash site. “The two police operatives were travelling on a motorcycle when they got hit. One Lexus car hit them. Kehinde and Tobi are the two operatives involved,” Ojelabi said.
Following the incident, police operatives recovered both the abandoned Lexus vehicle and the damaged motorcycle, which were taken into police custody as evidence. “We have launched a probe into the accident, and we are tracking the driver of the car. The vehicle and motorcycle involved have been recovered and taken to the station,” Ojelabi added.
The police spokesperson further disclosed that one of the deceased officers had already been buried in line with Islamic rites. He assured the public that a full investigation had been initiated and that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing driver. “We have commenced an investigation into the accident,” Ojelabi stated.
The Osogbo/Gbongan highway serves as a vital economic artery linking Osun State with neighbouring Oyo and Ondo states, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce, retail commodities and passenger transit. The fatal crash has drawn attention to broader concerns over reckless driving, highway safety and the enforcement of traffic regulations along Nigeria’s inter‑state corridors.
The Osun State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring that the perpetrator is brought to justice. Residents and motorists with any useful information about the incident have been urged to come forward and assist security agencies in their search for the fleeing driver.
