Suspected bandits have killed a resident and abducted two women during a night attack on a Fulani settlement in the Lafiagi area of Edu Local Government Area, Kwara State. The incident, which occurred on Monday, 1 June 2026, has heightened concerns among residents of Kwara North, a region that has witnessed a series of violent attacks in recent months.
According to a statement by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, the attackers stormed the settlement at about 8 p.m., firing sporadically and throwing the community into chaos. “Yes, one man was killed while two women, 25 and 35 years of age, who are wives of the Seriki Fulani, were abducted,” Ojo told reporters on Tuesday, 2 June 2026. Preliminary findings indicate that the assailants specifically targeted a prominent Fulani leader in the area, identified as an Ardo, but were unable to locate him. Unable to find their target, the gunmen abducted two of the leader’s wives before escaping into a nearby forest.
Eyewitnesses said the armed men stormed the Sodo/Sawmill area on the outskirts of Lafiagi town, shooting sporadically and causing villagers to flee for safety. A resident was shot dead during the operation. Security personnel responded to distress calls, with troops engaging the attackers and forcing them to retreat. The police commissioner confirmed that security forces are now on the trail of the fleeing suspects.
The attack has renewed fears over the deteriorating security situation in Edu and neighbouring local government areas, where residents have repeatedly called for stepped‑up security operations against criminal gangs operating from forested areas along the Kwara North axis.
As of Thursday, 4 June 2026, the two abducted women remain in captivity, and no arrests have been reported. The Kwara State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.
