A devastating road crash on the Girei–Song highway in Adamawa State has claimed the lives of six persons, including four serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and a soldier. The accident occurred on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, at about 1:50 pm along the Narehi area of Girei–Song Local Government Area. Eyewitnesses told journalists that a military gun truck travelling from Gombi towards Yola tried to overtake another vehicle at a critical bend just before Barikin‑Sajo. In doing so, it veered into the path of an oncoming commercial Hummer bus carrying five passengers from Yola to Mubi. The two vehicles crashed head‑on with such force that the bus flipped over and immediately burst into flames. The fire spread quickly, trapping all five passengers inside the burning vehicle. By the time emergency responders arrived, nothing could be done.
The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the tragedy in a statement on Thursday, 4 June. “Preliminary findings reveal that both vehicles were involved in a head‑on collision, resulting in the commercial bus flipping over and bursting into flames,” Nguroje said. “Tragically, all five passengers aboard the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire following the collision.” Preliminary identification showed that four of the deceased were serving corps members posted to Adamawa State. Two of them were identified as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both indigenes of Kaduna State. The police said a soldier who was attached to the military vehicle also lost his life. The other passengers on the bus were yet to be identified as of Thursday morning.
The driver of the military gun truck, who was among the military personnel involved, is also believed to have died, although official confirmation of his identity is still pending. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the police and local emergency workers evacuated the bodies to the Specialist Hospital in Yola. The remains have been deposited in the mortuary, where an autopsy and further identification procedures are expected to be carried out. Police said they have opened a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident, with particular attention to the speed and manner of overtaking of the military truck.
The Commissioner of Police in Adamawa State extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, the Nigerian Armed Forces and the NYSC. The tragedy has cast a pall over the NYSC community in Adamawa, where corps members have been serving in various primary assignments across the state. Many of them had been posted there only a few months earlier. The Adamawa State Government has not yet issued a statement, but security and emergency agencies have advised road users to exercise extreme caution, especially on the busy Girei–Song highway, which has become notorious for accidents caused by dangerous overtaking and excessive speed. The crash occurred on the same day that the NYSC was preparing to mark another milestone in its history, turning what should have been a routine travel day into a day of mourning for six families.
