The Human Rights Civil Society Watch of Nigeria (HRCSWN) has condemned what it described as an alleged attack on peaceful demonstrators during a Democracy Day protest held at Unity Fountain, Abuja, calling for a full investigation into the incident involving human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 12, 2026, the group said reports indicated that Sowore collapsed during the protest and was later taken to a hospital for medical attention. It described the incident as troubling and urged authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding what transpired at the protest ground.
The organisation stated that any use of force against peaceful protesters would be inconsistent with constitutional guarantees on freedom of expression, assembly, and association. It added that Democracy Day should reinforce respect for civil liberties rather than raise concerns about restrictions on civic space.
HRCSWN alleged that there has been a growing pattern of intimidation against civic actors and activists in Nigeria, warning that such actions could undermine public trust in democratic governance and institutional accountability.
The group called for an independent and transparent investigation into the incident, insisting that any individuals found responsible should be held accountable in line with the law. It also urged security agencies to operate within established legal frameworks when managing public demonstrations.
In its statement, HRCSWN criticised the handling of civic protests in the country, arguing that excessive use of force against demonstrators risks escalating tensions and weakening democratic participation.
It further called on the Federal Government to ensure stronger protection of citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, stressing that Democracy Day serves as a reminder of Nigeria’s democratic journey and the importance of safeguarding freedoms.
The organisation maintained that protecting civic space and ensuring accountability for alleged abuses remain essential for strengthening democracy and maintaining public confidence in state institutions.
Authorities in Abuja have not yet issued an official detailed response to the specific allegations raised in the statement at the time of reporting.
